Our driver mentioned that Cozumel is littered with cenotes ( ce·no·te , \si-ˈnō-tē\). For those that don’t know, cenotes are sinkholes filled with fresh water and that apparently provide a good portion of the island’s drinking water. However, most on the island’s cenotes are yet to be explored thus not open to the general public.
We decided to make our way to Playa del Carmen. Right outside the city there are several cenotes that you can explore and for a few bucks the taxi will wait for you to finish the tour. The walk was gorgeous, lush and green. The humidity nothing two native Houstonians could not handle and the water in the cenotes cold, real cold.
